Datsun or Nissan - why the two names?

In 1931 the world got introduced to the first Datsun, produced by Japanese car producer Nissan. The Datsun followed the producer's DAT model, only this car was a lot smaller. That's why they called the new model Datson: son of DAT, but because 'son' also means 'loss' in Japanese, they chose to make the name Datsun.

For years Nissan released cars under the Datsun name, such as the popular Datsun Bluebird. But in 1984 Nissan decided to rebrand and officially bring all its cars under the Nissan name, and models such as the Pathfinder and Urvan followed under the Nissan name. Until now the Japanese car manufacturer mainly produces Nissan cars, though it has brought back the Datsun name in 2012 in emerging markets such as India and South Africa.
